Who better to start off the engagement season than Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The Prince opted for an intimate engagement, just the two of them cooking dinner at home one night. There was no orchestra playing, no fireworks extravaganza, no grand public announcement televised to the world.
Whether you want to keep it intimate or you want to scream it (figuratively) for all the world to hear, there are some important things you should consider:
- Ask the family first for their blessing, if possible. After all, you are marrying into that family and it’s great way to start off.
- Hire a photographer to capture the moment. Trust me, your fiancé will thank you when she can look back for years to come and see the day that started it all. You can also do your engagement photoshoot that same day. Just make sure that she is dressed the part or this may backfire.
- If it is a complete surprise, and you didn’t have the luxury of getting her opinion on the ring, then consider getting a costume jewelry ring to pop the question. That way she’s surprised and has a say in what her ring will look like. After all, she’ll be wearing it for the rest of her life so she should like it. You can also use the fake engagement ring for trips where you don’t want to take your real ring on.
- Don’t put it in food!! There’s nothing that kills the mood faster then a trip to the ER or having to wear a sticky ring.
Now that you have the HOW figured out, WHEN is next on your list. According to data released by Facebook in 2015, Christmas Eve is the most popular day to get engaged followed by Christmas Day, New Years Day and Valentine’s Day. Whether you want to follow the trend, or pick a day that’s special to the both of you, consider when you would like to have the wedding and how long of an engagement to have. If it’s always been your partners dream to get married in the summer at a winery in the Okanagan, then getting engaged on Valentine’s Day only gives you 4 months to plan your wedding. That is unless you wait 1 year and 4 months for the summer after next.
